Effects of Candidiasis
Many cases of candidia occur after taking antibiotics. Antibiotics kill all bacteria, friendly and unfriendly, in the gut. Because candida is yeast, however, it is unaffected by antibiotics. After the bacteria in the gut die, candida can take over and multiply. In susceptible individuals, a sugar rich diet may also contribute to the development of candidia because the yeast tends to favor sugar. (There was an interesting study concerning yeast and sugar published several years ago in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a high sugar diet made certain individuals worse, but did not uniformly increase the growth of candida in all individuals on the sugar diet. The authors of the study concluded that a high sugar diet alone may not be enough to cause candidia, but if you have candida or are susceptible to developing it, a high sugar and carbohydrate diet will likely make your candida worse.) Hormonal changes brought on by the menstrual cycle, oral contraceptives, and diabetes can also cause or exacerbate a candida infection.
